Habitat for Humanity National Capital Region builds simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with low-income working families, sponsors and volunteers in an effort to promote affordable housing and homeownership with an interest-free long term mortgage as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Since 1994 Habitat NCR has provided housing to 97 children and 57 adults from our community.
Our 2009 build project promises to be very exciting as it will be the first time Habitat NCR will undertake a Youth Build. The purpose of this project is to engage youth between the ages of 16 and 29 to teach them new skills, provide mentorship from skilled trades people and seasoned volunteers, offer opportunities for leadership development, and offer exposure to viable career opportunities to help meet the need for skilled labour shortages in the construction industry.
The Youth Build will utilize the talents of approximately 400 - 500 young people. Students will work with an architectural firm to design the house. Under the guidance of experienced Habitat staff and volunteers, the youth teams will work on various organizational tasks such as material acquisition and setting up build schedules and timetables.
This project would not be possible without the generous support from the community of Ottawa at fundraisers like Urbana. We thank you in advance for sharing our vision and bringing dreams to life for deserving families.
