Ottawa, ON – Dharma Developments hosted its 3rd annual URBANA Gala last Wednesday evening at the beautiful National Gallery of Canada. An exciting mix of guests, a hugely supportive corporate community and some very talented youth from the Youth Services Bureau helped to make the event the success that was anticipated.
All in attendance enjoyed an evening of funky music, food, fashion and art. The surprise of the
night was the audacious “Streetwear” fashion show designed by Youth Mentor and artist Jordan
Kent. With designer outfits created using duct tape, sleeping bags, newspaper and dental floss,
the show illustrated the resourcefulness and vulnerability of youth living on our streets today.
Unanimously, party-goers were awe-struck by the enthusiasm and creative talent displayed by the youth from YSB. Attendees were quick to buy up the 13 birdhouses personally hand painted by the youth. This initiative alone raised $1,300 to bring the estimated grand total to approximately $15,000. To top off the evening, several prizes were awarded with the grand prize being a trip for two anywhere in Canada donated by WestJet.
The Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa provides a safe, non-judgemental environment for youth
with difficulties affecting their physical and emotional well-being and development. Dharma
Developments hosts URBANA annually by working with community programs that support the
goal of eliminating homelessness. “If we want to improve the quality of life for everyone in
Ottawa, we cannot overlook our Youth-at-Risk. Our youth deserve to grow up in safe homes to
afford them the best possible opportunities in life.” says VP of Dharma Developments, Katy
Sinha.
Seven local businesses pitched in their support for URBANA. Corporate sponsors included: Gowlings, Direct Energy, Grandor Lumber, FoTenn Consultants, WestJet, Intrawest & Uniglobe Premiere Travel and Uncommon Thread. Gracious thanks to the media partners Axionic, Metro News and Caroline Phillips from the Ottawa Citizen.
Dharma Developments will continue to host URBANA annually with the end goal of eliminating
homelessness. Visit the official URBANA website for event coverage and pictures at
